In our class, we use depth and complexity icons as a way to help students explore topics at a deeper level. Today, we learned about "contribution." We examined and discussed several pictures to develop our understanding of what "contribution" means. In the end, we learned that contribution leads to change- one thing contributes to another, which can contribute to another, and on it goes. Next, students were given a building challenge to demonstrate their understanding of this concept. Groups were given a bag of dominoes, playing cards, a toy car, a ping pong ball, a dixie cup, and a marker to tinker with. The students could use any combination of the items to show that contribution leads to change. Here are their ideas: |

At the beginning of our Invention Stories Unit, we introduced the students to invention stories that had been categorized into groups. Students were assigned a group, then got to select and research about a specific invention. Students shared their research findings with their groups and used the information to determine big ideas that connected each member's inventions. They were then given the challenge to use just one sheet of poster paper to present their invention findings and big idea to the class. Here are their projects:
